I remember when LaJin, the Mystical Genie of the Lamp was a got-tier card in my day. The hardest 4-star, 1800 beat stick. Then we entered into the Summoned Skull phase... 6-star 2500 beat stick that was insane.

I'm a collector for Yu-Gi-Oh, but I've taken a massive step back because I don't see any hope for the next generation for Yu-Gi-Oh there's no incentive, prizes are lame, and I can't teach this to any of my kids because lack of interest

As an outsider of the community who just played vanilla yu-gi-oh, maybe a new way to introduce new player is to generate a new set and format that takes you back to a simple version of the game, so the new begginer can play and enjoy the game from the get go, and evolve with this new format.

Just make the card lore anime, problem solved

I had a thought to combine maxx C with pot of greed. Durning either players turn: If the opponent has Special Summoned more than twice (Quick Effect) You can discard this card; draw two card. You can only use this card once per turn.

My son and i quit this game back in 2006. 95% of the cards issued were absolute chaff.

Never fear. I IS here! lol. I am a new player, BUT. To Master Duel. I'm taking advantage of all the gems they give you at first to build up two decent decks and then actually learn the game. Apparently... I am starting on a bit of an out meta SalamGreat Deck using update jammer and TransCode and AccessCode. I have put in about 20 hours over the last week. The funny thing is... I randomly picked YuGiOh. I am a PC gamer and I burnt out hard having worked from home since the pandemic, I play video games almost as much as I actually work. So I switched to playing Roguelite and games that vary more in their gameplay loop that are short. I also enjoy deckbuilder rogues and noticed that a lot of the game play is kind of based on TCGs so. I downloaded Magic and Master Duel last week. I decided to watch a couple tutorials about both game and well. YuGiOh seemed more dynamic and fast-paced. PLUS, YuGiOh Master Duel is WAY more f2p friendly for learning with all the gems you can easily earn. I plan to use these gems to build two or three decks in Master Duel and if I really get into it. I will start to build a couple physical decks. I really enjoy the Salamangreat deck I have built in just a week and can't wait to build up materials to craft the cards I need to make the deck more compatible with current metas. I wish I would have discovered this back in its prime. :shrug:

No anime, no hype, no new players. Also, the game is overcomplicated and difficult to get into. That's all.

Personally i would love to play , but thats dependent on local popularity... however i still like to buy atleat a deck from each card game i come across. I have Dragonball , pokemon , magic , yugioh , lorcana , flesh and blood , metazoo. I even have Baseball , basketball cards and i collect playing card decks too.

Great video. Very simple tip for beginners or returning player (like myself). If you are going to play Yu-Gi-Oh! just for the sake of playing the game then play whatever you want or whatever is NOT META and set your expectations LOW, so you do not get DISAPPOINTED.

Why doesn't Konami give the cards unique IDs for a trading card game. New 2023 games are using it so registering and transfer makes sense! All these cards are mass produced like cars just listing what box they came from, reducing value.

I'm genuinely curious where you're getting the cost for printing quote from? This isn't a call-out, I'm working on a TCG and would LOVE to know where I can get a box of cards printed for around $20 😅 If you have this information, I would really appreciate you sharing it

One thing I want to toss into the pot is that producing the TCG on a design level is more expensive because the cards are localized into many more different languages, and with how japan-centric Konami is operating I imagine that the OCG is carrying none of the cost in order to keep it cheaper for the domestic audience.

Coming from a MtG perspective, one thing that’d help me graduate from casual player to more serious would be new formats. Different ways of playing the game with different restrictions. Yu-Gi-Oh has an incredibly well updated banlist which is something I wish MtG did, but the different official formats allow me to play in different ways and in different metas, keeps the game fresh. An example of one of my favourite formats in MtG is a format called Pauper. It’s played like regular 1v1 magic (60 cards, draw 1 card per turn, maximum of 4 copies of any given card), except the main restriction is all cards must have been printed at common rarity at some point. I’d imagine a format like that in Yu-Gi-Oh would be significantly different than what everyone is used to.

How to fix yugioh product problem? Simple, scrap everything and just copy 1 to 1 from ocg. I want sets with cards in multiple rarities, it appeals to budget players, competitive and collectors alike, i really feel like it should be criminal to have thrust in secret rare only on tcg while it is a rare in the ocg. Also, please for the love of god, we should have smaller sets, holy crap, every set has 100+ and most of them are garbage

I definitely agree with the goat/edison structure decks, as someone who personally doesn't play competative yu gi oh that's just a product i would 1000% buy right away if they made it

Like opening a box. People aren’t worried about what there pulling unless they make there money back and pull there chase cards. And even then they aren’t buying a box because they are excited about the set. They have literally decided they just want to gamble.

I never understand why they have to separate between OCG and TCG. The game is dying everywhere else but still doing well in Japan so Konami couldn’t careless like the pos company that they are.

I have an idea for a Maxx "C" errata/new version of Maxx "C": You must have no cards on the field OR graveyard/banish zone to activate Maxx "C" Maxx "C" has to be the first and ONLY card you activate that turn. This will stop people from using it after building a full endboard, it will also stop people from activating other handtraps like Ash, Imperm or dropping a Nibiru on their opponent after resolving Maxx "C" Every time you draw a card this turn you immediatly take 400 damage. This makes the amount of summons needed to beat someone using Maxx "C" go from at least 35 to only 20, though now you beat them with Maxx "C"s burn damage instead of deckout. And if those changes aren't enough then this final effect would also be on the card: During the End Phase of this turn, Banish cards of your choice in your hand, face-down until you have 6 left. This also helps balance Maxx "C" because you no longer start with half of your deck in your hand, the reason i specified Banished face-down is so that the cards discarded cannot be used in ANY way. they cannot be recycled into the deck, they cannot sit in the GY to be used later. the cards discarded will be removed PERMANANTLY (unless something like Kashtira Arise-Heart attaches the banished cards as materials then gets destroyed)

Yugioh killed itself with everything after xyz summoning. Link and pendulum made Yugioh WAY too complicated

Yugioh was fun ages ago, but Konami destroyed the collective and play ability of the game by doing mass reprints. The game is not unique anymore, in fact its far more complicated then what it needs to be with boring mechanics and the amount of print you have to read just to take one turn.

We have to fix Konami before we fix the products. End..of…story.

In OCG, you can lay down a card on the field, activate it's effect and summon your boss monsters with just $20. In TCG, it costs $500 dollars just to lay down a single card, and apparently get negated.

Link, synchro, pendulum, and xyz summoning drastically killed accessibility to new and retirning players. New and returning players that have no experience with that just go nah fam im out. 😂

I think the magia thing is good for yugioh there can be super expensive collector cards that don’t impact the meta game at all so if you want that card just to flex or you got that gambling addiction you buy all the packs and for us normal guys who just want to play get our cards at a reasonable price

Remember when you got a dead draw, pass your turn and pray for the other player to also get a dead draw and do the same? The game was AMAZING back then.

I don't know a ton about this game, as I haven't really played since around 2013. Now I play MTG, and I don't know how they can solve this problem. The power creep seems so massive and it looks like it's in a death spiral from the outside looking in. The best option in my opinion would be to introduce several new formats that are sanctioned at tournaments. Magic has some excellent stuff to take inspiration from. Like: More transparency - MTG's lead designer has a blog where he answers questions daily, and also runs a podcast talking about his methodology and history with the game. They also have a show where another high level designer talks about their processes, history, etc. Konami lacks this severely. - Draft where players build decks out of a sealed pool - Planeschase cards - A deck of cards that each have a random global affect. You roll a six sided die and either go onto the next one, get an additional effect, or nothing happens. You can spend mana (they could use life) to roll again. - Archenemy - Similar to liar/legendary actions in dnd. It's a multiplayer game where everyone is trying to fight you and you get one effect you can activate each turn similar to a legendary action. Your action is drawn from a separate deck. - Two Headed Giant - multiplayer format where it's 2v2. One of MTGs strengths is that there are tons of variety of what kind of game you can play. At one point things were looking quite grim and then they introduced a new format(that was developed by the community) and it lead to an explosion in popularity.

This game is dogshit now, went from a simple game with back and forth card effects, to an overly complicated class of AP literature with monster paragraphs to detail the STEP 1 of a long 20 minute combo to basically GG you turn 1.....not to mention the stupid prices to even REMOTELY be competitive. As soon as they started introducing Syncron and the following card types, the game started going down hill. Why? Because Konami trapped themselves in a corner where they essentially HAD TO make a brand new card type ever so often to "keep the game fresh." The Edison format I have found semi-refreshing, a nostalgia pill honestly, but to make this game thrive again, the game needs to be completely reset back to its roots or make a "spinoff" version. Yu-Gi-Oh 2? Konami needs to see these other new TCG games that are getting ppls interest, they are thriving and fairly simple to learn. If they somehow can reset this game to a simpler, less BS paragraph reads, this game can attract old fans and new ones. Main 2 games I would look at is Lorcana or One Piece TCG...the leader deck idea is not something new that Yugioh hasnt done before, Duelist of the Rose....literally one of the best games they did IMO for the simple fact that it still preserved the cards BUT added a new twist. These new games have added new mechanics or even expanded on the Deck Leader feature. Almost forgot, TOURNAMENT PRIZES in Lorcana or even in OP make the grind to learn and play in them, worth it. (yes I wrote a paragraph, ironic)

I don’t play lorcana but boy were you wrong lol. I’m definitely not a fan of anything Disney related, but as someone who does play TCG’s I obviously heard and seen lorcana. I haven’t really dived into that game and probably never will but I heard it’s pretty fun. It has a lot of major events so I think it’s here to stay honestly, people are liking it a lot.

the saddest thing, is that it's not even remotely difficult to fix yugioh. while this is definitely one of the best videos on the topic, there have been ample videos already, for years, discussion how tcg product could be improved. There is 0 reason to think konami tcg doesn't pay attention to the game as a whole, as if they didn't, they wouldn't know what cards to short, or what cards to "rarity bump". it's with that particular though in mind that leads me to believe there is only 1 way to fix yugioh proper: *Let it fall off.* period. last year, yugioh hit arguably the largest slump it has ever seen as far as how much product was actually moving off shelves, and for the first time, in a LONG time, konami actually took a step to resolve the issue of their dumpster fire sales, by almost 1-1 importing the greatest set of all time (rc1). unfortuunately, konami didn't learn the correct lesson, as we saw with rc2 that they almost immediately went and erased everything that made rc1 such a good product, by hiking the price, altering the set structure, and filling the set with far lower value than what they could have made. no matter how many intelligent solutions you, or anyone else provides, the only thing that will solve the problem, is for players to embrace _not_ buying new product, and instead understand that, same as players who do time wizard formats, it is possible to play the game with only the cards you already own. keep *_playing_* yugioh sure, but stop *_buying_* yugioh. let konami tcg eat loss after loss, until they are so desperate to reclaim their players that they never even think to pull the same tricks they currently employ so freely right now. sure, you don't get the new $500-1k staples or meta decks, but if given the choice between that, or making the game healthier for good, i would rather not (and i really haven't) put money into supporting konamis terrible practices.
